"Has my baby missed the newborn stage?"

"Is my baby too old for newborn photos now?"

"Would you still be able to take photos of my baby, please?"

These are some of the most common questions I receive from new parents who worry that their little one is now too old for those precious newborn photos. If you’re wondering the same, let me put your mind at ease.

My answer to all of these questions is always the same: Please don’t worry – it is never too late to capture beautiful photos of your baby.

I completely understand why these questions arise. Many photographers, myself included, often recommend scheduling newborn sessions when babies are between 7 and 21 days old. This is typically the timeframe when babies are at their sleepiest and still naturally curl up as they did in the womb, allowing us to capture those beautifully serene, curled-up poses.

However, while this is considered the “ideal” window for traditional newborn photography, it is by no means a strict rule. The reality is that stunning, heartfelt images can be captured at any stage, and every age has its unique charm.

Why 7 to 21 Days Is Often Recommended

The reason behind the 7 to 21 days recommendation is largely due to how newborns naturally behave in those early weeks. During this period, babies tend to sleep deeply and more frequently, making it easier to pose them in those adorable curled-up positions. Additionally, they are generally more flexible and less likely to be disturbed while being moved or gently positioned.

But here’s the thing – not every baby follows this pattern. Some little ones are more alert from the start, and others are naturally more relaxed even as they grow older. And that’s perfectly okay!

What If My Baby Is Older?

If your baby is past the 3 to 4-week mark, you might be worried that you've missed the window for newborn photos. The truth is, you haven’t missed out at all! It simply means your baby is becoming more aware of the world around them. They might not want to sleep as long or may stay wide-eyed and curious throughout the session. This brings a different but equally beautiful dynamic to the photos.

Older babies tend to have more defined facial features, stronger eye contact, and wonderful expressions that can be captured beautifully. We can still achieve some gorgeous wrapped-up shots, as well as lovely images of those big, bright eyes, sweet stretches, and heart-melting smiles.

My Approach – Baby-Led Photography

As a natural, baby-led photographer, I always work around you and your little one. Every baby is different, and my goal is to capture their unique personality and those precious early moments, just as they are. If your little one is awake and alert, I will work with that, capturing their inquisitive expressions and those captivating wide-eyed gazes. If they doze off, I’ll gently transition to softer, sleepier poses.

I believe in celebrating every stage of your baby’s growth, from their tiniest newborn days to those first gummy smiles. Whether they are a few days old, a few weeks, or even a couple of months, every moment is worth capturing and cherishing forever.
